❤️REMEMBERING THE DROUGHT BREAKER🖤

Today, September 7th, 2021 is the 2nd anniversary of our “2019 Seniors Premiership” which to many feels like yesterday. It’s also the 8th anniversary of our 2013 flag and a great time to reminisce on the breaking of a 58 year drought:
2013 NFNL DIVISION 3 GRAND FINAL
Panton Hill 13.9-87 defeated Watsonia 13.8-86
Goals: Abe Williams 3, Brendan O'Connor 3, Ben Finnin 2, Jarrod McGough 2, Tristian Kreymborg , Tim. Duckworth , Zac Williams
Best: Abe Williams, Tyler Scarce, Joffa Byron, Tristian Kreymborg, Jarrod McGough, Lloyd Toffolon
Panton Hill broke a 58-year premiership drought by the narrowest of margins against a tenacious Watsonia outfit at Epping Recreation Reserve. Our team included current Coach Simon Amore, and Co Captain Tim Duckworth, as well as Zac Williams who owns “Foster Hydronic Heating” one of our Major Sponsors. Sadly current ‘Hiller Nathan Hendry suffered a devastating injury in the Prelim and missed the big dance, making up for it in 2019. A young Jackson Mill was Waterboy.
Having won 11 matches on the trot the Redbacks were warm favourites and the Grand Final was going according to script in the first term, and although playing very wide when entering the forward 50m, we seemed to be controlling the game.
Abe Williams, winner of the best on ground medal, kicked two of his three goals early on to help the Redbacks get our noses in front.
On three occasions during the game, the Redbacks pushed out to more than a two-goal lead, only to have the Saints hit back to regain front spot. However midway through the final term we were 19 points up, and appeared to be cruising to victory but Watsonia responded by booting four goals in quick succession giving them the lead again, but more twists and turns awaited as the arm wrestle continued.
Redback Brendan O’Connor passed to Jarrod McGough 35m out on a tight angle. McGough’s shot never looked like missing and the lead changed yet again.
At the next centre bounce, Tyler Scarce found Ben Finnin inside 50m. Finnin’s shot fell short but Zac Williams took a hanger and put us seven points up.
With just 90 seconds left on the clock the relentless Saints surged forward again and goaled from a tight angle reducing the margin further, but the siren sounded immediately and the ‘Hillers were home by a single point.
Fittingly, Alan Lacey, back pocket in Panton Hill’s 1955 premiership team, presented the cup to Coach Dean Haydock and Captain Will Box.
Sadly, in a reversal of the Senior game, the Saints held on to win the Reserves flag by eight points against the Redbacks earlier in the day.
Watsonia 8.8-56 defeated Panton Hill 7.6-48
Goals: Lachie Pearson 4, Nathan Grimshaw , Anthony Kidd , Nick Prenc
Best: Lachie Pearson, Dave Varano, Nathan Grimshaw, Simon Gunn, Nick Prenc, Daniel Pratt
